Kids have suffered long enough from a year of distance learning. Every family that wants 5 day full schedule in person learning should have that option and teachers should be required to return to the classroom once they are able to be vaccinated.

California recently adopted the CDC guidelines for student distancing in school --- 3ft. This is a significant change and means in that schools no longer need to use cohorts. Students should be allowed to attend in person 5 days a week. Schools are not using deep cleaning because there is no covid surface transmission. For example:
Albany: students attend 5 days a week, from 9-1pm or 9-1:30pm.
Berkeley: students attend 5 days a week, about the same time as Albany
Piedmont: students attend 4 days a week, in AM or PM for 2.5 hours
The approved agreement between OEA and OUSD specifically says to follow CDC and CDPH guidance. Why doesn’t OUSD follow the CDC guidance on social distancing? There is no need to have cohorts of students.

I urge OUSD to continuously negotiate with OEA to advocate for 3 feet of social distancing in schools, as per CDC recommendations. The science behind this is very strong, and our kids deserve so much more than a few hours per week.

Please ensure that the schools are fully opened by the fall. Those that do not want to return can have the choice not to, but keep in mind that many will be vaccinated by then, and the CDC guidance and science show that reopening is safe. It is not just the "privileged" parents who want to reopen. There are many Black and Brown parents who are very frustrated that people are speaking on their behalf, saying that they don't want to return. This is based on old data when there were more cases of Covid and the elders in their families were not vaccinated. Many of them have been vaccinated now. California is 50th in the country for reopening, and we have seen a 4-fold increase in mental health ER visits. Let's figure out a way to return safely per CDC guidelines. Thank you.

What is being done to ensure that parents (who are voters) are listened to over and above the teachers union (who is not a voter, and not a constituent, and should be considered as such)? The majority of parents want to return to in person schooling now, not a half baked 5 hours a week in the afternoon.

We have thousands of pages of scientific evidence, and explicity direction from the CDC, CDPHD and ACPHD that opening now is critical for the children and safe to do full time, with 3 foot distance. Lets follow the TA (which defers to the ACPHD and CDC) and the state law and open our schools 'to the maximum extent possible'....which is 4+ days a week, all day.

Can you offer some insight into the substantive education that will be provided in person. Our teachers said none - just social. How are we addressing learning loss if we can’t have substance in person? And what ever happened to summer school? I don’t know how it’s lost on this board that people in the Bay Area need to make childcare arrangements months in advance.

What are we doing to ensure that students who are not returning in person will get an equitable learning experience while keeping themselves and their families safe? I know you are being pressured and threatened by some privileged Reopen Now parents, but we are looking to your leadership to ensure that we are not leaving some students behind as a result.
