The Oakland NAACP reminds the board of its commitment during last year's adopted MOU with the Literacy for All campaign. After a year of robust engagement, we believe it necessary to submit an administrative petition to the Board and Superintendent regarding the need for immediate relief on behalf of our kids. The petition has been emailed to board members and ousd counsel. Curriculum adoption is not on the agenda, but it should ALWAYS be. That's a problem. It will have a huge impact on student achievement and teacher turnover. We demand that a curriculum be adopted, expeditiously, that has evidence of success and can be fully implemented by teachers within the bounds of their contract. Our children are not guinea pigs and our teaches should not be required to make 'bricks without straw'. Further, we demand that chosen curricula be adopted with the condition of a time-bound, contractual agreement to infuse it with diverse characters (with costs listed upfront). We must not wait.
I am disappointed that a new legislative matter has been introduced that would take us backwards in enrollment. Families overwhelmingly support a unified enrollment system (73%) according to OUSD's survey yet the board is proposing a new policy that would cost OUSD money and separate the enrollment systems. Oakland families want QUALITY schools not a marketing approach that makes school information and data less transparent. Please refocus on improving quality and not tearing down systems that are working for families.
