20-1398 A Report to the Board of Education from the Equitable Enrollment Working Group regarding its work to date on prospective revision of Board Policy - BP 5116.1 Open Enrollment.
We need to prioritize our historically marginalized and deeply under-resourced Black and Brown students by investing in innovative community schools that support our young people. Prioritize the Alternative Education Hub at 1025 2nd Avenue, CCPA and McClymonds for the upcoming bond.
The Alternative Education Hub @ 1025 Second Avenue will keep young people in school, build bridges from high school to career and college and support the transition to adulthood, disrupt the school to prison pipeline, and dedicate an historic OUSD site that is adjacent to beauty and opportunity to the youth most in need of resources and support.
My name is Sloane Noel-Johnson. I’m a 2008 Skyline graduate and community organizer and product of Oakland. I’m urging OUSD to include the Alternative Education Hub at 1025 Second Avenue in the November Facilities Bond measure because of what I’ve seen and what I hope to see.
In my life, I’ve seen many kids I grew up with in my neighborhood get killed, shot or lost to the streets. So many of my friends have been thrown out, pushed out, left out to the point that their only option was to drop out. They needed something just like the Hub, their families did, to make it. Vulnerable students who are in OUSD TODAY NEED something just like the Hub—they need wrap-around services, career education, bridges to college. Upcoming kids will too. I’m looking forward to seeing the Hub up and running and transforming lives in my neighborhood and across Oakland. Board members, make that happen by taking bold action. Include the Hub in November’s Facilities Bond Measure tonite!
I STRONGLY ask that an Alternative Education Hub at 1025 2nd Avenue be included in the November 2020 OUSD Facilities Bond Measure. The proposed hub at Second Avenue includes wrap around services and programming aimed at addressing drop-out prevention & successful transition to collage and/or career, plus admin space for programs servicing students & families. This hub, helps to keep young people in school, builds bridges that go beyond high school and college therefore enabling program participates to “give back” to the program by highlighting their successes and mentoring. I urge you to give those most at risk of falling into the school to prison pipeline an opportunity to take advantage of all life enhancing available resources. Board members, invest in innovations that support and prioritize under-resourced Black & Brown students.
I feel strongly that OUSD must include the ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION HUB at 1025 SECOND AVE. in November’s Facilities Bond Measure. OUSD hasn’t done right by students who are vulnerable. The time is now!
The proposed hub at Second Avenue includes career technical education, wrap-around services & programming aimed at drop-out prevention & successful transition to college and career, plus admin space for programs serving students & families. The one-stop shop keeps young people in school, builds bridges from high school to career and college, disrupts the school-to-prison pipeline AND dedicates an historic OUSD site—adjacent to beauty & opportunity—to youth who most need resources & support. Board members, invest in innovations that support and prioritize under-resourced Black & Brown students. Prioritize the Alternative Education Hub at 1025 2nd Avenue.
