I request that OUSD remove funds from OPD and redistribute those resources into programs and organizations that will help students and the betterment of our community. The OPD has proven over the years they are not the organization to handle student issues.
As an Oakland resident with 1st hand experience of OPD terrorizing students I stand with the majority of the community demanding that OUSD remove the police force from its schools. If you’re wondering how that money could be used here are a few suggestions:
Pay the teachers,
hire more counselors,
invest in EdTech,
supply students with laptops,
healthier options for the cafeteria,
take school field trips,
fund a college scholarship,
beautify school campus,
make students feel safe!
I stand with Black Organizing Project and call to defund and eliminate police from schools. As a resident of Oakland, district 1 and a Special Ed Teacher in district 5, I call upon the board to eliminate police from schools. I work with students with IEPs who have NEVER received their LEGALLY REQUIRED mental health services. Instead, OUSD has been pouring funds into policing black and brown students and inadvertently triggering and re-traumatizing their parents while claiming that there was no funding for these CRITICAL services. I ask you all as board members as to why you became an educator, and why so you would continue to support the police? I stand with Black Organizing Project, black and brown students, and community members in the call to eliminate police from OUSD.
