19-2639 Adoption by the Measure G Parcel Tax Independent Citizens Oversight Committee of its 2018-2019 Measure G Parcel Tax Independent Citizens Oversight Committee Annual Report.
I appreciate the Measure G Oversight Committee's report and agree with some of the questions it raises--is Measure G intended to be used as part of the General Fund? The vagueness of the language of the parcel tax appears to allow for such use by OUSD but as an Oakland homeowner and taxpayer, this is not what I voted for! As an educator in OUSD since 2008, I have seen countless colleagues leave the district year after year. I want to know exactly how the district is using these funds for teacher retention because it is far from obvious.
As a teacher librarian (1 of 2 in the entire district) at Franklin Elementary I am continually disheartened by the lack of funding that libraries receive and I'm baffled that we don't have a single teacher librarian at any of our high schools. We are failing students at preparing them to be college and career ready. Measure G is not a bailout for the district's financial missteps; it's time to use Measure G to fund the programs it was intended for.
