I strongly support the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department. Armed police officers located in places of learning are neither necessary, appropriate, nor effective in ensuring a safe learning environment for students in OUSD schools. These funds will be better spent on school support workers and trained professionals that can ensure young people have access to the conflict resolution, mental health, and school support systems they need. Thank you for registering my support of this critical resolution - let OUSD lead the way.
Since the implementation of restorative justice practices, our schools have become more safe. This makes the role of police in our schools obsolete. Oakland School Police are now a just waste desperately needed funds and an unwelcome presence on our campuses. Please disband the force.
I support the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department. Police are inappropriate to handle the events that occur with children/students and are a traumatizing force within the educational environment. Money is better spent on professionals trained to help students, not arrest them.
My name is Jessica Hallett and I am an Oakland resident with children who I hope will attend OUSD schools in the next few years. I want a better future for them, but moreover I want a better future for ALL children. All children are not served unless that includes our Black students and other students of color who are disproportionately negatively affected by police. When this happens in school, it impacts those communities negatively forever. Let's protect our Black and other POC community by demilitarizing places of learning. This isn't just an educational issue, it's a public health issue. It's a basic humanity and fairness issue. I stand with our community in demanding that we remove police from OUSD and I wholeheartedly support the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department. Listen to the public health professionals, listen to the experts, LISTEN TO THE BLACK COMMUNITY.
I support the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department. I am a public health professional and a co-author of a policy statement on law enforcement violence for the American Public Health Association. Public health workers know: 1. Experiencing police stops & interactions in any form or witnessing police violence can result in anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse, depression, poor self-rated health, attentional impairment, poor school performance, suspensions, & expulsions among youth; 2. Experiences with police in youth can result in adverse health outcomes in adulthood; 3. Students most at risk for violence by school-based police are students with disabilities, students of color, & students experiencing poverty; 4. Female, Black, Latinx, and low income students feel significantly less safe in schools with higher levels of security. If you support the health of your students, I urge you to vote in favor of the George Floyd Resolution.
I support the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department. This is an issue that disproportionately affects black and brown children with disabilities. We must focus on providing the best possible special education for our students, including services to support mental health needs. All students must feel welcome and safe at school. I urge you to eliminate the Oakland Unified Police Department and reinvest in the supports our students need.
