I am a Faith in Action leader and an Imani Community Church member and strongly support establishment of an Alternative Education Hub at 1025 2nd Ave. This unique facility will serve our city's vulnerable students and our community has suffered too long without it.
I’ve lived in the East Oakland flatlands for 40+ years and still remember my kids’ neighborhood friends who got caught up in the school-to-prison pipeline. Who knows what they would have achieved if they’d been nurtured by the Alternative Education Hub’s wrap-around services?
I am inspired by the hub, including its plans for hands-on, multi-trade job training; help for continuation school grads in attending community & 4-yr colleges and apprenticeships; office space for community partners that serve students’ multifacted needs.
Board members, take advantage of this window of opportunity to do good and change students’ lives. Include the Alternative Education Hub in OUSD's Facilities Master Plan.
I am a Ceasefire Leader with Faith in Action East Bay, Live Free Committee. I’m in favor of the plans for an alternative education hub at 1025 Second Ave.
I was raised and educated in Oakland when OUSD was always ranked tops in the nation. Things were different for my younger brother. My aunt, a Dewey admin office employee, she told my mom about the school. As a result of this continuation program, my brother graduated on time with his ! Today, my brother is a successful manager helping to keep Safeway stores open! With your help, an expanded Dewey can do the same for many more young men and women in need in Oakland.
In this current COVID-19 crisis, educational inequity is more pervasive than ever. The Dewey Hub is the specific program needed to help jump start the re-education bridging process once the crisis subsides. I strongly urge inclusion of the Dewey Academy expansion into the 2020 Facilities Master Plan.
I am a leader in Faith In Action East Bay's "Live Free" campaign, focusing on equity, economic justice and alternatives to incarceration. We want to see an alternative education hub at 1025 Second Avenue. We need to do more to serve our most vulnerable youth. 1025 2nd Ave is a perfect location for this, given its accessibility via public transportation, its location next to Laney and the proximity to so many businesses and economic sectors that can provide internships and work opportunities for students. It would also be great to see cooperation with a community-based organization that can assist in making housing for young people in need of safe shelter a part of this education hub. Please ask staff to begin working on this idea. I have been impressed with the improved outcomes that the Dewey program has achieved. This is a great opportunity for our young people who often find themselves facing multiple obstacles to success, and for the district's leadership to serve them.
